Fethiye region

FETHIYE
Fethiye is located on the Turquoise coast in SW Mediterranean Turkey. The whole region excluding Fethiye and Eşen lowlands is covered with high mountains forming the southwestern peaks of the Taurus Range. These mountains exceed 2000 metres in places and extend all along the coastline.

Lying at the foot of these mountains, looking out over a sheltered bay is the traditional town of Fethiye. Whilst in other holiday resorts life quietens down towards the end of the summer season, life in Fethiye bustles on throughout the year. With its abundance of fertile land, agriculture is the main source of income alongside tourism. The climatic conditions permit almost all kinds of vegetables and fruit and industrial plants as cotton, sesame, tobacco, and aniseed to be cultivated.

The special nature of contact between the producer and consumer may be witnessed in the town market, held every Tuesday, is an experience not to be missed. Everything can be bought here for good prices (as long as you haggle), from fruit and vegetables to genuine designer fake handbags and clothing. Souvenir shops are located around the Turkish bath and the old Mosque in the area known locally as “Paspatur”. During the peak season you can buy leather-goods, carpets, rugs, gold and silver jewellery and other souvenirs at good prices from these shops which stay open until late at night.

Fethiye is the main centre in the region and as such has everything you could possibly need.

The banks, ATM machines, change offices, post office and government buildings are located along the main street in town. Pharmacies, shops, restaurants, clubs and bars can all be found in Paspatur – the back streets off the main road. There are two supermarkets in Fethiye Migros on the outskirts of town and Gima in the centre of town on the main road.

Local dolmuş services run at regular intervals to and from Fethiye and most of the toursist resorts and attractions in the region. The dolmuş station in Fethiye is located behind the white mosque on the main street. Should you wish to take a taxi from Fethiye there are several taxi stations around the town, never more than a 5 minute walk away. Most of the taxis are metered, the minimum fare being 3 million TL. If there is no meter, be sure to agree a price with the driver before getting into the vehicle as there are a few around who will try to take advantage of tourists.

Fethiye has a number of hospitals, both government and private. The government hospitals have improved dramatically over the years, but still fall short of the levels of service Europeans expect. In Fethiye there are two private hospitals for doctors services and emergencies – Letoon Hospital and Esnaf Hospital. The nearer of the two is Esnaf Hospital, which is well sign posted and is located just off the harbour front in the Tuzla area of town. Standards in this hospital are extremely high and the service is on par with European private hospitals. Letoon Hospital is located on the main road east out of town.

The police station is situated on the main street in town and the police patrol Fethiye regularly throughout the day and night.

OLUDENIZ
Ölüdeniz Lagoon and Belcekız Beach are are known all over the world as ‘Blue Paradise’. Campsites, hotels and colourful holiday complexes with lush gardens provide a large capacity of accommodation for tourists.
Ölüdeniz literally means ‘dead sea’ and takes its name from the beautiful blue lagoon located a few hundred yards from the main town. The beach itself stretches for several miles, but the most popular section is the lagoon with its stunning backdrop of mountains and pine forest. This area has been designated a National Park and there is a small entrance charge, but it is well worth paying - there are shaded areas suitable for picnics, showers and snack bars.

Ölüdeniz has a post office, pharmacies, shops, restaurants, bars and many small markets for your day to day needs. For supermarket shopping you will need to go into Fethiye where you have a choice of two - Migros on the outskirts of town and Gima in the town centre.

Local dolmuş services run at regular intervals to and from Hisarönü and Fethiye. The dolmuş station in Fethiye is located behind the white mosque on the main street and from Ölüdeniz the buses run from the beach front. Should you wish to take a taxi from Fethiye to Hisarönü it should cost you no more than 25 million TL on the meter (about ₤10). If there is no meter, be sure to agree a price with the driver before getting into the vehicle, as there are a few around who will try to take advantage of tourists.

As Ölüdeniz is fairly small there are no banking facilities, however, Hisarönü has an ATM machine and almost all the hotels and shops in the area offer exchange facilities. All these services can also be found along the main street in the centre of Fethiye.

There are medical services available in Ölüdeniz that are open late into the night during the season and Hisarönü has a small private hospital that is linked with the Esnaf Hospital in Fethiye. Medical standards are extremely high and the quality of care is on par with European facilities.

The local jandarma station is located on the sea front in Ölüdeniz.

CALIS
Çalis is situated 5km by road from the centre of Fethiye and is one of the most striking residential and recreational centres in the region. ‘A place to watch sunsets’ is how some visitors to the area describe Çaliş and the views across the bay are certainly stunning, especially as the day draws to a close.

Çaliş is a small but growing resort that appeals to people who like to combine sun, sand and sea with a bit of local colour. It is set on an inlet protected by 12 islands forming a natural harbour shared by fishing boats, yachts and water taxis. The two mile sand and shingle beach at Çaliş is ideal for families with children and there are many water sports and other activities on offer. Further down from Çalis, Kargı, with its beautiful beach and incense trees, is a newly developing resort with a number of hotels and holiday villages.
